We work according to the latest guideline
In 2020, the Dutch Association of Urology (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Urologie) (NVU) updated the guidelines for prostate cancer diagnostics. The revised guideline states that, in the case of an elevated PSA level, an MRI scan should be performed first, before a biopsy is considered. Detecting and, in particular, ruling out prostate cancer has therefore become easier and less painful.
As a result of this change, approximately two-thirds of patients require no further diagnostic testing. In these cases, either no abnormalities are detected or there is no indication of an aggressive form of cancer that would require treatment. These patients receive reassuring results within a few days.
For patients whose MRI scan suggests a possible aggressive form of prostate cancer, further investigation in a hospital setting, such as a biopsy, is required. The MRI images allow the biopsy to be performed in a more targeted and patient-friendly way..
